The absent shade is loving, warm personification. She keeps a positive attitude no matter whom or what she's around or with. Melissa has a rough mentality for some things, when things get out of hand, her attitude often shows for it. While she's a motherly, elder color, she's also the scientist of the bunch, this too often makes her answers seem encrypted or embedded into something further.
Clothing for the science infested color is usually only monochrome colors. This is her usual attire, keeping it warm, formal, and easy on the body. Black, white, grey, or occaisionally a soft blue are often the only kinds of dresses she wears. And even then it's a rare thing for her. However she almost always wears thigh high white boots, though a nice set of formal shoes are equally as okay.

While most of the characters in these parts tend to be alive 'from the beginning' no one ever wonders about the color tones before the modern shades. Before the early 1500's there simply was no color. Only deep tones of greys, blacks, and whites that occaisionally were tainted with pastels. As for true colors, they simply didn't exist, and from this... Colorless was born. No, not born, but created amongst the mix of nothing. While soldiers marched off to battle, women were left to care for the infants and the elderly. Of course, a spare child was to be no mystery in this time... but Melissa (then Mary) was taken in as their very own.
And since the other children had heads full of dark hair, or eyes as brown as soil, and Mary did not... She was an oddity amongst her so called siblings. With her blank skin, snowy white tresses, and empty black eyes poised her as some kind of monster compared to the other's. In fact, she wasn't even treated the same after she'd grown from her infant days. There was a sense of hostility from not only the children, but the adults that had once soothed her fears, and hummed her asleep. This didn't run her off, not at all! In fact, she took residence with the men of the village. Running errands and sharpening weapons didn't bother her, in most cases... it kept her on track. This too didn't last long when her developing powers began to surface.
Normal little girls got to pick beautiful flowers, they could wear pretty blue dresses, and could pick vibrant colored berries... Mary could not. Everything her fingers touched became white, grey, or black. Even if the world was pastel, everything seemed oh-so-bright. She wore white clothes, ate grey berries, and picked black daisies. This was the final straw that the elderlies would allow, and with a final "Be Gone!", Mary was no longer a member of the green relished village. Instead, she faced a world she knew nothing of... and only at the age of five, nonetheless! Terrified of her own hands, she simply wandered until she was standing in front of the largest... most blue mass she'd ever laid young eyes on.
The ocean welcomed her with open arms, it gave her hopes she never would have gotten elsewhere. There were waves taller than she, and sunshine, and even birds that stole fish from the water's bearing. Why hadn't any civilizations destoryed this harmony for crops? And almost as soon as that thought passed, the ocean seemed to whisper, "Fools drown easier.." That seemed to answer every question she had, other than how long she might be able to stay. And to make the fear die away, when she touched the pastel blue water... if stayed right like it was. No greys, whites, or blacks... just vibrant pastels of the fish and the water. Unknown to her, she was amongst the only spot not only availible for cropping... but invisible to the human eye.
After a complete set of two years, Mary had come to embrace her abilities with the snowy after effects of the rainbow. All things bright must have a dark or death, and she had the ability to bring this. However, it wasn't all too bad. She'd already learnt how to control her empty bringing fingertips, and how to change the variables of the colors around here. Not only this, but the ocean had taught her many skills, especially those to keep her alive. Fishing, cleaning the water, and even making fire for herself had become a talent of perfection. Alas, she wasn't alone anymore. In fact, she'd been being observed by another being like herself, but he seemed to be different in aura. Mary stared this being in the eyes for the first time around her tenth birthday.
Their meeting was the best thing to happen to her, not only did she have a friend, she had someone with the exact same problems and talents she did. His name? Damien, and he was everything in the world to Mary. They may have only a new friendship, but it was a pure and true friendship. From their color zapping abilities, to their vibrant abilities to make the colors around them change places. With their youthful innocence and their sweet intensions, they were simply the best of friends. In their eyes, time dragged on, but in reality? They were practically budding adults by the time they realized they'd lingered in the limbo of the world long enough for the ocean tides to turn over another being. An embodiment of Blues, Azures, Saphire... she was already the age of Damien and Mary, but her conception brought the vibrant bursts of blues to explode over each berry, ripple on every wave.
Not soon after that, the mountain behind them growled and rumbled with anger, spitting forth lava in the brightest red color they'd ever saw. And from the cooled ash, stepped forth another being. He was all that is red, maroon, and every shade of crimson. Now roses were bright, lava showed it's burn, and blood oozed crimson. The four beings realized what they were, they bore the birth of everything with a tone, hue, and saturation. With this in mind they began their journey away from the birth place of rainbows, to find the civilized area of the north. Decades had past by now, and with this in mind, so had society. Yet, there was something wrong with the sky. So much blue, and the horizon of red... but there was no color to the sun. Even when Damien and Mary tried... there was no color.
But this was a lost cause, however other tides were turning. Mary's name was no longer something cliche, she was Melissa. A selfchosen title that kept her eyes wide, but now those eyes saw something more. Her once childhood friend had become the love of her life. Not only was he everything she wanted, they found all of what they need through eachother. It was a honest-to-God love story between the two of them. And soon, they were married. Their honey moon was spent sitting side-by-side in the back of an old boxcar. The world was becoming a more colorful place as there were colors appearing all over the world, and meeting up in Azure's self created domain. But Melissa? She had her paradise with Damien Elkridge, and the world mattered nothing.
Suddenly, their trip around the world was interupted by a telegraph from Azure and Seil (red), they too were to be wed on the day fall returns to winter. And as fast as one could snap their fingers, both Colorless and Monochrome were rushing their way back to the Spectral Clan to watch this beauty of a memory. The day was dressed in blue and white roses, and under the falling petals of a cherry blossom tree, Melissa turned to Damien. Her blue eyes were stone cold and solid, "Forever, right?" and with what reassurance he had, a smile dawned his usually stern face. "Right." that simple dialouge became the highlight of her life. No matter the case of their own happiness, Seil and Azure were married a week after. And this too blossomed the arrival of an entire new since of colors.
Melissa was there the day Azure had Ian (Orchid), the purple haired - gold eyed child that lacked much of a cry. But became the first thing Colorless had ever seen to be naturally birthed a color. Not too long after that, another child was born. Violette (Violet) was a bright pink eyed variation of Ian, a pure amount of bliss on the entire clan of colors. Then a new family joined the rest of them, the dirty colors. Pure Umber, Ecru (Nekko), and their newborn Brown (David). And then that's when a miracle occured. From the empty rays of the sun, and the warmth of the aftertones of summer into fall came Kiro, a new Primary to the color scheme. And with his arrival, Azure found out she was once more pregnant. Melissa was already on edge with the other children, but more seemed to create a void.
She personally, wasn't able to have children, her body lacked the organs for it. And without much effort, she had taken it upon herself to house all the color scheme's offspring when there was little space for them. Watching those children became a sickness of sorts. And her usual blue eyes were black again, and even Damien couldn't soothe these wounds, they were just to festered over time. But their love was still strong, they were one and the same and their hearts were too pure for there to be a second thought. Too soon, there was a new child in the color scheme. Purple (Gaz), an oddity of no other's born to the color scheme. The child's abnormalities intrigued Melissa beyond anything else. He was born third, yet was the main tone of the other variations. Her new found occupation was figuring the whereabouts of Gaz's mixed genes.
Science, mystery, and a mix of enthusiasm and fear drove Mel to find what kind of grace (or monster) had befallen the calm of the Clan. Blood testing and DNA splicing filled her afternoons until she ruled him with the only thing she could think of. Obviously, the shapeshifter's traits were gifted soully on him, rather than his siblings. After that was solved, Melissa kept a book of the advances and changes in his behavior. Her obsession with science blinded her from witnessing the downfall of the world around her. She grew sick, but once more cured herself with simple herbs and spices. But money was scarce and soon Damien had to join the workforce. It was nerve wrecking, but he went off to work every morning, leaving his mortified wife behind. And Melissa's fears grew more and more... until they became a reality.
While the entire Spectrum was at peace, war was brewing. She stood silent, watching young Purple and Orange blow bubbles beside a tanning Violette, accompanied by pastel brown, Orange's older sister. All was good. Life was at it's peak.. and then the gates to their society opened to let in a sleek black buggy drawn by a strong, intimidating Stallion. The colorless shade was approached by a stern looking Indian man, he looked her dead in the eyes before removing his dark specs. "We're sorry to tell you of the passing of your husband, Damien." the words never sank in, she just shook her head. "Nonsense, my husband just went to work not an hour ago!" but there was nothing sweet in the voice of the second man. "Ma'am, the building caught aflame from stray lightning, Damien didn't make it out." that's when things became real. And silence fell over the entire spectrum.
Both men exchanged a glance at the woman in front of them, her eyes were as empty as her soul now. With a firm hand, the rich skinned male held out a silver ring with an obsidian sphere in the center. Melissa's petite fingers gripped the band between the tips, and then the tears ran like rivers. Both the humans left the Clan to their bearings, gates closed, and a heartbroken widow fell to her knees. Nekko and Sarah (Saphire) consoled the woman and took her into the home she'd built with the only person she'd ever honestly loved. With the most of their ability, the two tried making Melissa breathe, but she'd have no reason. All she wanted to be was side-by-side with Damien again, not standing below staring up. Not long after that the first Spectral cemetery opened. As for that ring? It founds it's place in the heart of the Elkridge home. Sitting on the fireplace with a soul lifting gleam. But Melissa was still dead on the inside.
Everynight she would sit in front of a grave, talking about what was going on and what was keeping her from losing it all. A simple stone knew every secret, every worry, every desire... it laid right in that cemetery. But then, as if life was telling her to open her eyes... she found a child standing on her doorstep. With neon colored purple hair, heterochrome eyes, and a line of stitches across his lips... stood a confused color. He resembled Gaz in every way possible, and that's when she remembered her research. A distorted color, a neon, she shot a glance to her window garden, and the grey flowers gained the sweetest and brightest of purple tones. "Someone told me to come here...?" that was all she needed to hear before she whisped Zag into her home. Heliotrope, the brightest-bordering-color in the purple spectrum. After a few tests, she knew exactly what she was looking at.
After meeting Zag, she met Orik (Olive Yellow). The two children became like her very own, whether it be lecturing their mistakes, or encouraging their attempts at success. Soon though, Zag was 12... Orik was 16 and the two were still inseperable. However, one night after a trip shopping... Melissa returned to find Heliotrope curled up asleep on her front porch... in the rain. With the scoll of a mother, she whisped the child inside and put away her bags. After a heavy tearjerking lecture, she returned to the carnival Orik and Zag lived at, with the neon's hand clasped tightly until she was facing the golden haired boy. And another lecture later, the two had made back up and the world was at ease. Perhaps she didn't want to see something so innocent and new become something lost and forgotten. But the happiness burning in the Spectrum made everything turn around for her.
As the neon she knew so well got older, Melissa took the liberty to explore every molecule to his odd DNA, becoming so intrigued... she developed an entire library of books consisting on the matter of the Distorted genes between Neons and Secondaries, Neutrals and Primaries. But her own science was nothing like that which the colors Green and Teal had hired to remove the bond of Yellow and Purple. This wasn't a game to them, and before long there was no colors. Just lost, brainwashed beings that were spread all over the world... but then there was Melissa, Zag, and Orik. All of which weren't effected. She gathered information to locate Gaz and Kiro before turning to her younger companions. Explaining how they needed to find their pure shading counterpart, and work their way back home. Of course they were nervous to leave eachother's side... but alas, they took their parting to find the other's.
Gaz was an easy find, Melissa was blessed to see he was still living in Spectral Ave with Azure and Seil. As for Kiro? She'd only been able to give Orik a list of possible places. And Zag and Gaz were together, like she planned. Mel has this planned. It may have taken nearly five years... but she arranged Zag and Orik meet at the old carnival, leaving Gaz and Kiro to find eachother in the park. And it worked! A faithful day, and the pure's were together, as well as their counterparts. Memories began to come back, and with that the Color Scheme Cafe opened again. With it's opening... more colors began to pour in. And with more colors, Melissa had the technology, smarts, and cash to redo her research. That's when the Spectrum grew more advanced than society, and humans sealed the gates to Spectral Avenue... in fear that perhaps the colors might grow hostile and attempt to recreate the humans.
But that's when our reality check catches up. Years of tension and stress over those gates caused a single act of kindness from the colors. Halloween celebrations opened the neighborhood to the public. But by then Gaz had a set of twins (Kaz & Giro) of his own, and a bonus child. Zag and Orik also had their own child (Uri/Orin). Melissa stood back and watched this. All the humans and hybrids standing tall amongst her own people... it was amazing to see the differences in attitudes. While it was rare for a color to expirience human desires, it was rare for a human to possess instincts like the colors. She stood on her balcony with a smile, seeing a mix of creatures become equals... until those gates closed. That's when the paranoia set in... snow began to fall. Rarely did it snow in the Avenue, but now? It came down in two feet.
Uri, the Etnomleb child, grew deathly sick; fighting amongst the Obsidians became more known; Pink was pregnant; And Orange was standing on Melissa's front step with dead eyes. A heartbroken lad whom was jerking the end of his chain with all his stregnth, and getting no reply. He'd known Purple since they were children... and had fallen quite hard but asked Melissa to help him overcome this feeling. Finally, with some explanations, the color of the lad seemed to brighten and he wandered back to his residence with a stronger aura. Melissa smiled, she'd once more corrected what was wrong in the spectrum. And it forced a smile to spread across her pale lips. However... a war with a familiar foe was waging. And after the battle with Cinder... her weapon was taken. What might seem irrelevent to our story was Mel's priceless holy blessed blade that was in the hands of a demon.
An old color can forgive, but with recent wars coming to end. Life's doors open to a new bright future. Things have become normal like again, with colors in harmony, humans remain intimidated, and the gates willed shut. Seil and Azure's family strong. Melissa's own will strong, along with each memory adorning those saphire eyes. From the day she met the love of her life, to the day she stared down at her brothers and sisters and saw the intentions innocent to the humans around them. Harmony, pure harmonyy had encased the Spectral Avenue, and seemed to brighten the colors of each shade and tone. Their own little society flourishing with the best of wishes and dressed in silk to the world surrounding a simple few miles of unexplored land. Through the darkness lay a future of hope, and Melissa became greatful to live on Damien's legacy... even though she's never been convinced he ever passed.
